Leia Coursing - The Rules

FEDERATION INTERNATIONALE des ASSOCIATIONS de la CHASSE de LEIE

Viscount of Elvet's Rules: an attempt to bring order and grace to a up-till-now scrappy, if compelling spectacle.

A large gently sloping field is to be found: with plenty of small holes in the upper boundary.

A number of Leias are captured before the event, and caged separately.

Two warriors (or 'hounds') compete in each round: they must remain no more than 1 foot apart throughout the contest.

The Leia is released ten feet in front of the hounds: who then give chase.

A point is scored by any hound who forces the Leia to turn away from it: thus the left-hand hound scores if the Leia turns right, and vice versa.

Ten points are scored if the Leia is brought down by a hound: these may be shared between the hounds by the judges. It is inadviseable for the hound to be allowed to eat the Leia: as this tends to rob its appetite for further contests.

The round ends if the hounds separate: if the Leia escapes at the top of the field: or if the Leia is brought down.

Contests may be in the form of head-to-heads, knockouts or leagues, depending on the supply of Leias.
